Our Story

Gathering Homeland is a Texas-based project supporting land retention efforts of Black agrarians with rural family land by centering storytelling, cooperation, and environmental stewardship.

This is a love letter to our ancestors who envisioned us here. Gathering Homeland centers the journey of Black agrarians reconnecting with family land. We aim to decrease land loss and support Black agrarians in stewarding the land that has been passed down through generations.

Through various means, such as discrimination, terrorism, unjust partition sales, and adverse possession to name a few, Black folks continue to lose land. Loss of farmland contributes to food apartheid, gentrification, and adverse climate conditions. Much of the land at risk is in culturally significant rural communities across Texas and throughout the South in many communities that are considered to be Freedom Colonies.
